Poultry should always have access to grit especially if they are confined in a run or indoors. Grit aids their digestion because it acts as the hens 'teeth' in the crop to grind up the food. This is a flint grit which is just the right size for poultry. Ideal to help young chicks digest their food.

Oyster shell grit is used to provide poultry with enough calcium to produce strong bones and good egg shells. Modern poultry laying feeds usually contain sufficient calcium but there is no harm in providing some additional calcium in this way, particularly if poultry are being fed on household food or straight cereals.

Since poultry have no teeth they have evolved to peck grit which helps to grind their food in the gizzard. Flint grit should always be available (in a separate container to the feed) so the birds can help themselves.
