The loose ring cheek has greater movement than a fixed cheek which can discourage fixing and leaning. The loose brass alloy discs in the centre of the bit can help to soothe a fussy tongued horse.

The Dutch Gag has a French link in it which means pressure is applied to both sides of the tongue.
